Location: U.S. Army Garrison Livorno (Camp Darby) is a small, remote installation located in the Tuscan region of central Italy situated between the cities of Livorno and Pisa. Camp Darby is a 10 minute drive from Pisa, home of the famous Leaning Tower and is 60 miles from the city of Florence, home to the world-famous Uffizi Gallery and Michelangelo's masterpiece, the statue of David. Camp Darby is probably best known as a recreation destination. Located in Pisa, the installation's beach, campground and guesthouse attract US and NATO soldiers, family members and DA civilians from across Europe. Population: Camp Darby is an Army installation with the Army, Air Force and Navy military populations assigned, civil service, Non-appropriated Fund (NAF), Contractors, Retirees and Family members. Since Camp Darby has the only American Beach in Europe, during the months from May to September the installation is visited by over 40,000 visitors from the European military communities.

Base Transportation: There is no longer base transportation (Shuttles) provided on or off base.
Child Care: Camp Darby CDC cares for children 6 weeks to kindergarten. Programs include full day, part day, Before/After School Care and hourly care. Child Development Services offers 10 hours of free care per child per month for E-4's and below. Camp Darby's School Age Program is located in the Elementary School, Building 201. Schools: Livorno Elementary/Middle School (K - 8th Grades) is located on base. Students attending grades 9 - 12 will have the option to attend the International School of Florence (ISF) or receive home schooling. Once accepted, busing is provided from Camp Darby and return. Please be aware that ISF is located 90 minutes from Camp Darby. Parents are responsible for contacting the school and completing an application for admission. Admission is by selection at ISF. Important information for parents with children in grades 9 - 12 -- All incoming personnel should be aware that students in grades 9-12 have the following educational options:
Sponsors should review program guidance for the NoN DoD Schools program online. Registration information is available under "First Steps for Parents" Registration must be completed before committing government funds. Parents are encouraged to contact the Non DoD Schools Program for further information regarding educational options.
Passport and Visa Requirement: It is absolutely essential that you obtain a visa for each of your Family members prior to leaving your current assignment. It is a mandatory requirement and failure to complete this action will subject your Family to risk of deportation.
POV Insurance: Important Information, Please Note!-- When you are considering shipping a vehicle to Italy, it is important that you contact an insurance carrier to request an estimate of how much insurance will cost. On average, insurance can cost up to 20% more compared to the same coverage available stateside. The options that are available for insurance coverage in Italy are GEICO and USAA. GEICO and USAA Representatives are able to give you a free quote prior to the shipment of your vehicle. Please call GEICO at 1-800-248-4998 or USAA at 1-800-531-8111.
POV and Motorcycle License: In order to operate a private owned vehicle/motorcycle or a non-tactical government vehicle in Italy, you must obtain a SETAF drivers license. In order for you to obtain a SETAF drivers license, you must be 18 and must possess a valid stateside license or a valid license from another country. Your stateside or other valid drivers license must be stamped with the appropriate "motorcycle qualification" in order to initiate a SETAF motorcycle qualification and license.
Weapons: It is prohibited to ship or transport weapons to Italy.
Youth Services: One Teen Center on post. Available to youth in the 6th - 12th grades, the program provides an after school program for middle-schoolers and teens. Housing: 68 units of government leased housing. All government-controlled family housing at Camp Darby is leased housing in the community, within a 1-hour commute of Camp Darby. There are no on-post government owned family housing dwelling units at Camp Darby. Visitors can access the website in two ways: 1) Visiting the site directly by logging on to HOMES.mil or 2) Logging on to the Army Housing Online User Services website, select an installation and then click on the community housing link.
Employment: Due to budget and manpower cutbacks, employment opportunities are quite limited. It may take one to three years to find appropriated fund employment. Non-appropriated fund employment is more plentiful in the recreational, child care and clerical areas.
Medical Services: Active duty soldiers are the first priority for medical services at the U.S. Army Health Clinic Livorno. Family members are the second priority and are entitled to medical services, contingent upon the availability of space. Appointments: 314-633-7357. All requests for emergency services should be called directly to the MP desk at DSN 314-633-7575. Emergency services are provided through the local Host Nation community.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions
The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included. The operator can be reached at commercial (719) 567-1110. Please note that long distance charges may be incurred.
