 Menwith Hill is part of the Nidderdale Region of North Yorkshire

Location: RAF Menwith Hill is located in the Yorkshire Dales in England, approximately 8 miles northwest of Harrogate, 20 miles north of Bradford, and 222 miles north of London. The post code is HG3 2RF. The Nidderdale region is known as an area of outstanding natural beauty. The local community is very much like a small town with many diverse cultures both on and off the base.

Cost of Living: The United Kingdom is a high cost of living area for the military. Personnel should be prepared to defray added expenses not normally found in the States, i.e., television license and road tax.

Population: RAF Menwith Hill is a joint population base including Air Force, Army, and Navy. The base also has a large DoD Civilian population along with major contractors. Besides the U.S personnel assigned to the base, there is a large Ministry of Defense (MOD) workforce.

Area Population: Harrogate: 70,000

Base Transportation: RAF Menwith Hill provides a shuttle bus to Harrogate for Menwith Hill personnel with valid I.D. cards. It operates seven days a week, except joint US/UK holidays and there is no charge for this service. The MHS bus is a hail and ride service, please flag the bus as it approaches and have your ID card ready.

A shuttle bus runs from RAF Menwith Hill to RAF Lakenheath two days a week for military members needing medical services at Lakenheath. Arrangements for active duty to use this service are made through the appropriate orderly room. Civilians can use this service on a space available basis by contacting the Motor Pool at 314-262-7771.

If you wish to rent a car, there is a Budget Rental Car office on base. To reserve a car dial 011-1423-77-7807.

Child Development Centers: One Child Development Center (CDC) offers care for children ages six weeks through twelve years. Programs include Full Day Care, hourly care and Part Day Preschool. Call DSN 314-262-7890 or 011 44 1423 777890.

Family Child Care (FCC) homes available in the Harrogate community, offering care for children 6 weeks to 12 years. Programs are offered for Full Day, Part Day Pre-School, Hourly, Extended Hour, Shift Work, PT and Long Term Care for Temporary Duty.

Schools: PLEASE NOTE EFFECTIVE JUNE 2015, The Menwith Hill Elementary/High School will close. RAF Menwith Hill has one school on base, Menwith Hill Elementary/High School, for grades K-12. Bus transportation is provided free of charge to off station family members who live near the bus routes. Standardized test scores for the Menwith Hill Elementary/High School are available through the DoDEA Data Center.

RAF Menwith Hill personnel may send their children to local British schools. There are numerous primary and secondary British schools in the Harrogate area available to American families. More information on British schools can be obtained by contacting the School Liaison Officer, 011-44- 1423-777-345. Additionally, information on private schools can be obtained from the Independent Schools Information Service, 56 Buckingham Gate, London, SW1E 6AG, telephone: 011-44-171-6308793/4.

Youth Programs: The Teen Center is open to teens in 7th to 12th grade. Amenities include a TV linked to SKY and VCR, Nintendo 64, Pool Table, Table Football, Stereo, CD, Dance Dance Revolution and Player Graffiti Board. The Teen Center also has a snack bar selling candies, sodas and microwavable snacks. Swimming, ice skating, and trips to the movies are also offered at the Teen Center. They also organize special tours to local theme parks such as Alton Towers, and shopping malls such as the Metro Centre. Call 011-44-1423-777-191 or DSN 314-262-7191.

Housing: Menwith Hill has government housing units located on-station and in the surrounding communities. On-base housing is limited with most members selecting to live off base. On-base units are for accompanied military personnel. Civilian personnel will utilize private economy housing. British houses are generally smaller than American houses. You should carefully consider bringing oversized furniture such as large sofas, large cabinets and king size beds to the UK. The size of your furniture can limit your housing choices. You may want to be put large items into temporary storage at the Government's expense. Do not ship refrigerators, washers or dryers as these items will be provided for you during your tour of duty.

Employment: Like many other overseas locations RAF Menwith Hill is a challenging environment for spouses who are seeking employment outside the home. Jobs on base are limited and finding a job comparable to stateside employment can take months-if at all. Employment opportunities exist on base through the local bank, AAFES, Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF), DECA, DoDs, and area contractors.
Working out in the local economy may seem intimidating and complicated, but it is actually quite simple. Once the final steps are completed, you can find yourself feeling much more at home, meeting local people and becoming more immersed in British culture by working in the local area. The work may be full or part-time in a range of occupations.

Medical Services: The RAF Menwith Hill Occupational Health Clinic serves as the primary care provider for active duty personnel, and their family members. Although in most cases it will not be necessary, active duty military and their family members are entitled to utilize the services at RAF Lakenheath which is located 200 miles away.

Once you obtain permanent housing, we encourage you to estabilish care in town. The Menwith Hill Clinic is only open Monday - Friday. You can log on to http://www.NHS.UK and type in your post code to find a NHS GP who practices in your area. In order to receive medical care under NHS, you must register with an NHS physician in the village or town in which you live. There is no charge for visits to the GP or to NHS specialists to whom you are referred.

Military Uniforms

Members, be sure to have all the necessary uniforms, boots, ribbons and patches before coming to Menwith Hill. The closest military clothing store is located at Lakenheath about 2 hours away.

Computer Information

Prior to arrival, update and print out a current Computer Information Assurance Awareness certificate. To do this, go to the AF portal and click on the ADLS Adv Distributed learning system link. Once inside, select the course list and look for the course. This training is required to give you access to the MHS Government computers. Upon arrival, provide this immediately to your new supervisor to take to COM.

Car Seats

If your child is under 3 years of age, you must have the correct child restraint. Exceptions to this are: if you are in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle; or the child is traveling a short distance for reasons unexpected or necessary. If you purchase or regularly ride in a UK spec vehicle, you will need to purchase a UK car seat for your infant or child. US car seats are not allowed to be used in British cars.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions

The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included. The operator can be reached at commercial (719) 567-1110. Please note that long distance charges may be incurred.
