Location: The Naval Station (NS) Norfolk is geographically located in the Southeastern corner of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Hampton Roads is a region including the cities of Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Suffolk. Population: The region has over 1.6 million people and serves a very large community of active duty, retirees, family members and dependents, reservists, DoD civilians and Joint Forces.

Child Care: Child and Youth Programs provide Child Development and recreational services for children 6 weeks to 12 years of age. The Child Development Center provides full and part day care for children 6 weeks to Kindergarten. The School Age Center provides before and after school care and Day Camp experiences for children. Currently the waiting time for infants is 8-12+ months and children 2+ years the wait time is 5-8+ months. Schools: Naval Station Norfolk is served by 5 public school districts. Placement is based on the location of your residence. A number of private schools are also available.

Housing: The Hampton Roads region has several housing areas. There are 18 enlisted housing areas with a total 3902 units, 6 officer housing areas with a total of 226 units and 37 flag officer units. Employment: Hampton Roads possesses a broad and competitive job market within the military, municipalities, financial institutions, retail and service industries. Employment opportunities on NS Norfolk include Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR), Non Appropriated Funds (NAF), Navy Exchange and the Commissary. Unemployment Rate 5.8%. Median Household Income $70,589.

Medical Services: Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, 757-953-9796, Branch Medical Clinic Sewells Point , 757-953-9000 and Naval Base Branch Dental Clinic 757-953-8635. The Charette Health Center, Portsmouth (informally known as Portsmouth Naval Medical Center - NMCP) provides a comprehensive range of emergency, outpatient and inpatient health care services to active duty Navy and Marine Corps personnel, their families and the many retired military members in the Hampton Roads area. Hampton Roads is part of the TRICARE North Region.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions

The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included. The operator can be reached at commercial (719) 567-1110. Please note that long distance charges may be incurred.
