Location: Vicenza, Italy is the home of the U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza located on Caserma Carlo Ederle. The base is also home to 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team with units split between Vicenza, Schweinfurt and Bamberg Germany and the headquarters of U.S. Army Africa, which is America's premier Army team dedicated to achieving positive change in Africa. Positioned at the foothills of the Dolomites in northern Italy, Vicenza is the capital of the Vicenza province in the Veneto Region and lies midway between Venice and Verona. It is perfectly positioned within a 3-hour drive to Florence, Milan, and Bologna. It only takes a little more than an hour's drive north to find snowboarding, skiing or sledding and an hour drive to the east to discover beautiful beaches. Vicenza has a temperate climate with a dusting of snow in the winter, a profusion of blooming flowers cascading from windowsills in spring, and in summer, vineyards laden with grapes. Because of its strong cultural heritage and architectural treasures, Vicenza is often referred to as “Palladio’s City” . The province of Vicenza is home to the largest concentration of Palladian villas and structures in the world. For more information, go to the USAG Vicenza homepage.

Housing: The majority of the Soldiers and civilians assigned to the Vicenza area live in housing on the Italian economy, either in Vicenza or in neighboring communities. Typically personnel are housed within a 30-minute commute from Caserma Ederle. For this reason, we strongly recommend shipping a vehicle early enough to have it available upon arrival in Vicenza or be prepared to purchase a vehicle locally. Most unaccompanied, junior enlisted Soldiers in the grades of E-1 through E-6 will reside in the barracks available in Caserma Ederle. A small number of Senior Enlisted Bachelors Quarters (SEBQ) and Bachelor Officer Quarters (BOQ) are also available. Service members cannot be placed on the waiting list prior to their arrival in Vicenza. Call 011 39 0444 71 8583 (from US) / 011 39 0444 71 5532 Program Manager.
Employment: Limited employment opportunities are available at Vicenza (Caserma Ederle) and Livorno (Camp Darby) which make the job market very competitive. The Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) prohibits non-European Union member personnel; i.e. military family members, U.S. Military Personnel, etc., from working on the Italian economy. Further, such employment would render those persons "Ordinary Resident" status prohibiting them from employment with the U.S. Forces in Italy.
Medical Services: The new U.S. Army Health Center, Vicenza opened in September 2010 and serves a population of approximately 7,000 enrolled beneficiaries. Primary Care is available in the Vicenza Health Center for immediate and routine care for appointed patients. All enrolled beneficiaries with major medical illnesses or major surgical requirements can be referred to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany or other medical centers in the United States. Dental services are available both on/off post.
The Vicenza Health Center does not have an emergency room on site. However, emergency care and outpatient consultation is available at the local Italian hospital, San Bortolo. Bi-Lingual Patient Liaison Coordinators are available 24/7 to assist patients. The Health Center is capable of treating acute minor illnesses, lacerations, follow-up screening after discharge from the local Italian hospital.

In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included. The operator can be reached at commercial (719) 567-1110. Please note that long distance charges may be incurred.
