 Spangdahlem AB Photo

Location:  Spangdahlem Air Base (AB), Germany, home of the present-day 52d Fighter Wing FW), has been a steadfast military presence in the Eifel Mountain region of Germany for over four decades. The country boasts a great cultural diversity, charming towns and attractive landscapes. Spangdahlem Air Base is located in the federal state of Rheinland-Pfalz, about 20 miles northeast of the city of Trier in the southwest section of Germany along the borders of Belgium, Luxembourg and France. The Bitburg Annex, which adds to base space and facilities, is located about 10 miles from Spangdahlem in the city of Bitburg. This region is known as the EIFEL. HOT TOPIC: Temporary Lodging: From Dec 2013 - July 2014, temporary lodging facilities (TLF) are EXTREMELY limited.  Many new arrivals will be lodged off-base upon arrival.  Please plan ahead; ID-card holders should take their driver exam online prior to arrival.  Additionally, the required Driver Safety Brief will be offered twice weekly during this period to allow you to obtain your USAREUR license sooner after arrival.  These briefs will be Tuesdays and Fridays.  As always, your sponsor can be relied on for transportation while awaiting your license.

Cost of Living: Germany is a high cost of living area. The costs of off-base housing and utilities are high, but normally your housing allowance covers your housing expenses. Full coverage automobile insurance can be very expensive.

Base Transportation:  There is no shuttle service from Spangdahlem to Bitburg.  Personnel can take taxis which will pick you up on base and costs vary by distance or use the base's Share-A-Ride program. The 52 FSS Lodging shuttle service from Spangdahlem to Ramstein, Frankfurt and other airports is available.  You can find up-to-date shuttle-bus information at the Eifel Inn or online.

Child Development Centers: : Due to the lack of off-base child care facilities, it is highly recommended that you think about taking action on child care issues before your move to Spangdahlem. We encourage you contact the Child Development or School Age Program as soon as you know you have orders so your children can be placed on the appropriate waiting list as soon as possible. Eifel Child Development Centers (CDC) offer care for children from age six weeks to five years. Programs include: Hourly Care, Full-Time Care and Part-Day Enrichment Program. CDC available:

  • The Spangdahlem facility (Eifel East) is located in Bldg 457 and Bldg 440. Building 457 offers care for children ages six weeks - 36 months. Building 440 provides full day care for children 3-5 years of age as well as a Part Day Enrichment Program.
  • Family Child Care (FCC) approved homes are also available for full-time, part-time, weekend, drop-in, swing-shift and before and after school care.

Schools: DoDEA --Department of Defense Education Agency-- operates schools at Spangdahlem and the Bitburg Annex with classes ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade. The elementary schools are for grades K-4, the middle schools are for grades 5-8, and the high school is for grades 9-12 (located only at the Bitburg Annex.) The current forecast includes relocating all middle and high school students and facilities to Spangdahlem AB by 2017. Current Schools include:

Youth Programs: Youth Programs can be found at Spangdahlem (Bldg 458, Monday - Friday: 2:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., DSN: 452-6244) and the Bitburg Annex (Bldg 58, Monday - Thursday: 2:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., DSN: 452-9206). They offer programs and services to children 5 years through 18 years of age to include a Boys and Girls Club programs, 4-H, sports and instructional classes. In addition, two School Age Programs, two Open Recreational Youth Programs for ages 9-18, a Youth Sports Program for ages 5-15 as well as instructional classes in dance, gymnastics and cheerleading are available. Housing: In an effort to improve quality of life for all Spangdahlem AB military members and their families, you now have the choice to live in government housing or on the economy. Spangdahlem on-base housing is a mix of townhomes and stairwell units.  Government leased housing consist of town homes and four-plex units in three different off-base locations, offering 2-5 bedroom units. Employment:  The major employers on base are Civil Service, Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF), Defense Commissary Agency (DECA), Department of Defense Dependent Schools(DoDDS) and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). Visit the Human Resources office website.

Medical Services:  Active duty service members and their command sponsored dependents will be enrolled into TRICARE Prime Europe during base Newcomer's Orientation.

The Spangdahlem Medical Clinic, with a new facility opened in 2012, provides primary medical and dental care, internal medicine, flight medicine, and life skills support.

Medical services are available to civilian and contractor employees for a fee. Retirees, civilians, contractors, and their family members can be seen at the 52nd medical and dental clinics on a space available basis only, which is extremely limited. If your family is currently enrolled in the family member dental plan, do not disenroll before leaving your current location; keeping your enrollment active will allow dental coverage to be immediate upon arrival at Spangdahlem.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions

The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included. The operator can be reached at commercial (719) 567-1110(719) 567-1110.
