 MacDill Front Gate

Location: MacDill Air Force Base is located eight miles south of Tampa, Florida on the Southwestern tip of the Interbay Peninsula in Hillsborough County, Florida. The Tampa Bay community is "military friendly". Cost of Living:  Tampa, FL has a cost-of-living indicator of 99% based on the national average of 100. As result, Tampa is a high tourist destination and therefore cost of living is high.

BRAC Status:  BRAC 2005 has resulted in the gain 803 personnel of the 927 Air Refueling Wing.

Child Development Centers:  The MacDill Child Development Program operates three Child Development Centers. All centers are DoD Certified and NAEYC accredited offering quality early childhood programming for your children, specializing in learning through play.  For more information call 813-828-5750.

Schools:  MacDill's on base residents are served by the Hillsborough County Public SchoolTinker Elementary (k-5th grade) is located on MacDill. On base Middle School students are bused to Monroe Middle School and high school students are bused to Robinson High School. Depending on your commuting desires, there are an additional three Tampa Bay Area counties and schools, both public and private, available that MacDill families also attend. Youth Programs:  There is one Youth Center on MacDill AFB. The MacDill Youth Center  offers a variety of programs: School Age Program, Youth Sports, Pre-Teen and Teen Programs, and Instructional classes. Call 813-828-7956 for more information.

Housing:  MacDill family housing is privatized, managed by Harbor Bay at MacDill. Housing includes 572 units some of which are new. The housing area is made up of 169 units designated for officers with the remaining 403 set aside for enlisted personnel and 12 American with Disabilities Act homes. There are two, three and four-bedroom duplexes, townhouse style and single units. The units are all-electric and feature central heat and air. All units are equipped with stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposal and washer/dryer connections.

Local community housing is available. Rentals are moderate to high. The Housing Office can help with local housing options.

Dormitory rooms are available for junior enlisted personnel (E1-E4) with less than 3 years service.

Employment:  Metro Tampa /St Petersburg Clearwater unemployment rate is 5.9%. Unemployment compensation may be available for the spouse of a newly assigned military member or civilian employee. Base Services:  

Medical Services:  The 6th Medical Group is an outpatient medical facility, which provides quality patient care to the patient population of the MacDill. Patients who require specialized care in surgical or orthopedic services are referred to other military facilities or to civilian specialists. On base emergency services ARE NOT available on MacDill. In the event of an emergency, call 911 or proceed to the nearest hospital. A list of urgent care providers is located on the TRICARE South Provider Selection website.

  • HURRICANE SEASON is from June to November; the Hurricane Guide provides a complete guide including maps, evacuation zones, shelters and important phone numbers.
  • THE MPF CUSTOMER SERVICE SECTION (DEERS/ID CARDS) IS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Mission essential personnel (military/civilian CAC users) may walk-in at any time for emergencies only, i.e. CAC lockouts/pin resets. Please note, if a customer is more than 10 minutes late for an appointment, they will be required to reschedule. Appointments are available from 0730-1530 daily. Each appointment is limited to one ID card only. If a customer has additional ID cards to be renewed at one time, an additional appointment will need to be made for each card. Appointments can be made online and all questions can be directed to the 6 FSS Military Personnel Section customer service line at (813) 828-6673.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions

The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included. The operator can be reached at commercial (813) 828-1110. Please note that long distance charges may be incurred.
